Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)

Please visit:  Institutional Biosafety Committee and Environmental Health and Safety

The Institutional Biosafety Committee is part of the Department of Environmental Health and Safety for the University of Utah. The committee reviews and approves research involving the use of recombinant DNA and other biological toxins, rules on the appropriateness of proposed containment procedures, and sets suitable biosafety levels (https://oehs.utah.edu/topics/biosafety).  Approval from IBC must be received before the IRB will give final approval.

What should I submit?  If a study requires approval from the IBC as well as the IRB, an investigator must indicate in the IRB New Study Application on the "HIPAA and the Covered Entity" Page that the study involves recombinant DNA.  The investigator must also complete the required paperwork for IBC review. Please attach your IBC approval to the IRB application on the "Documents and Attachments" Page under "Other Documents".
