Student Volunteer Application
The University of Utah Institutional Review Board (IRB) is responsible for reviewing research projects that study people. IRB review makes sure that research meets high ethical standards, as well as federal and state laws. The IRB prides itself on serving the University’s researchers and the people who agree to take part in research across the State of Utah, the United States, and other countries all over the world.
The IRB is seeking student volunteers to learn about the IRB process and assist in reviewing medical, social, and behavioral research. Student volunteers will have the opportunity to represent the thoughts and concerns of community. Volunteers will help to make sure a research project is in the best interests of the human participants and is communicated in a way that the community can understand.
Generally, student representatives participate in the following ways:
- Serve for a specific period of time, up to 1 year;
- Commit to reviewing 1-5 research projects per month (approximately 4-10 hours a month);
- Agree to attend monthly meetings (approximately 2.5 hours per month); and
- Have experience using a computer, including the use of the internet, online software programs, email, and document viewing platforms (such as Microsoft Word and PDFs).
Student volunteers are not considered hired employees of the IRB or the University of Utah.
