Continuing Education
The University of Utah IRB offers a variety of continuing education options to ensure board members receive current and critical information relevant to their IRB service at least annually. We search for opportunities to explore, analyze, and deliberate a wide range of topics relevant to the review of human subject research.
Requirements
All current IRB Board Members are required to complete at least 3.0 credit hours of continuing education each calendar year.
- Continuing education must be completed within the same year the credit is applied for.
- You may use any combination of the options listed here to get your credits.
- Completion certificates must be submitted to the IRB no later than December 31st of each year to count towards your annual total. You may submit your certificates directly in each assignment in Canvas.
- Opportunities must be reviewed and verified by the IRB Director. Continuing education not listed here or in Canvas will not fulfill this requirement unless an exception is approved and documented by the IRB Director.
Opportunities that offer credits currently accepted by the IRB are listed in the Canvas course. If you would like to suggest a continuing education opportunity, please contact the IRB Director.

Why does the IRB require continuing education for members?
Institutional policy and accrediting agencies require that we train our membership on an ongoing basis. The board member continuing education program fulfills this requirement, while also ensuring our membership has opportunities to stay up-to-date and knowledgeable about current issues affecting the ethical conduct of human subjects research.
